Call Fixya to come and measure you water hardness today !
We call water "hard" if it contains a lot of calcium, magnesium or other minerals. Groundwater acquires these metals by dissolving them from surrounding soil and rock. Industry measures water hardness in terms of grains per gallon (GPG) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). A grain is defined as 64.8 milligrams of calcium carbonate . If your water tests at 1 GPG (17.1 mg/L) or less, then you have soft water. Water around 1-3.5 GPG (17.1-60 mg/L) occupies a gray zone between soft and slightly hard water and 3.5-7 GPG (60-120 mg/L) is moderately hard. Hard water is around 7-10.5 GPG (120 - 180 mg/L), and very hard water is above that.
How do all those number affect you? Hard water causes two problems:

How do all those number affect you? Hard water causes two problems:
- Dissolved calcium and magnesium precipitate out of hard water as scale, which builds up on the insides of pipes, water heaters, tea kettles, coffee makers and industrial machinery. Scale reduces flow through pipes and is a poor conductor of heat. Eventually, pipes can become completely clogged.
- Hard water reduces soap's ability to lather, whether in the shower, sink, dishwasher or washing machine, and reacts with soap to form a sticky scum.
Water SoftenersWater Softeners are the traditional way of filtering your water, they require salt or potassium which cleans the resin bed, they also require electrical connections and a drain, we size water softeners according to water usage in the home, we can supply these or you can purchase them yourself and call us to install them.

Reverse OsmosisReverse Osmosis are for a single point of use, they use filter and membranes to filter the water, most people connect these to either a dedicated faucet on the kitchen sink or to the refrigerator for a high quality drinking water, the filter replacement can be expensive, but due to the system only being used for drinking water, it has much less use and the filter do not need to be changed so often.

Whole House FiltersWhole House Filters are the new trend for softening water, filters use different materials to filter, from carbon to orange peel, these are the easiest to install but the initial cost can be high, the replacement cartridges can be expensive also and you may need to change it 2-3 times a year, the life on the filter depends on the water usage, the filter cartridges are generally easy to replace and most homeowners do it themselves.
